God gives Abram a promise and a vision in a dream. This is a prophecy, which is a promise of future events, and then it happens. Abram gets tired trying to complete this covenant. It is a picture to us that we cannot be perfect in our own strength. Just like he gave us the Ten Commandments to show us we cannot keep them and we need a redeemer.
